Students work on projects relevant to their woodworking experience - student Peter with his competed cabinet

At Lomandra Place Studios, Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, we hold safe and inclusive classes covering all aspects of woodworking, with an emphasis on developing fine hand skills, and careful and appropriate machinery use. We offer beginner and advanced woodwork and furniture making classes with Ross Annels, and with guest teachers.

We offer:

  • set courses in hand tool fundamentals, steam bending, chair design, safe machine use, and other specific topics

  • masterclasses and workshops with other leading artists, designers and makers

  • one-on-one training by arrangement.

All necessary woodworking tools and machinery are supplied. Students begin with a hand tools only project - learning to work to a fine level with hand tools is fundamental to furniture making. As well as making furniture, we explore drawing, design development and sustainable design.

Students will learn how to use hand tools, how to sharpen edge tools, and how to choose, make and tune-up hand tools.

We also cover safe use of power tools (our workshop is equipped with high quality tools from Festool, Elu etc), and the safe operation of major static machinery (our machinery is industrial scale - and includes a Felder panel saw, Wadkin jointer, Felder bandsaw, Hammer spiral head thicknesser, Hammer tilting spindle moulder, slot and chisel mortisers, overhead routers etc).

Our classes are suitable for all levels of skill, from absolute beginners, through to experienced woodworkers seeking to fine tune their skills or explore specialist techniques.

One-on-one classes are by specific arrangement, and specialist classes, workshops and masterclasses are by announcement. Join our mailing list to be sure you hear about upcoming classes.

Ross is an experienced teacher, as well as teaching from his own studio, he worked at the Cooroora Institute, masterclass presenter for Wood Dust Australia, as a guest lecturer in Product Design at the Queensland College of Art, and as an instructor at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine, USA.
